The 17th Annual Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup
Become a Site Coordinator or a Cleanup Participant for this national environmental conservation program of the Vancouver Aquarium. Have a positive impact on your local environment by removing litter from shorelines along ponds, streams, rivers, lakes, or oceans in your community.
Most shoreline litter originates from land and land-based activities, so by stepping up to ensure our litter doesn’t reach Canada’s waterways, we are all taking action to protect our environment.
For more information on how to become a Site Coordinator or Cleanup Participant, please visit shorelinecleanup.ca or call 1-877-427-2422. Register today!
About the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup:
The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is a Vancouver Aquarium conservation in action program that began in 1994 with a handful of Vancouver Aquarium employees who wanted to participate in the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup.
In 2009, nearly 57,000 Canadians registered to cleanup 1,568 sites across Canada. Over 160,900 kg of litter was removed from a cumulative distance of 2,500 km of shoreline, which is equivalent to the approximate driving distance from Vancouver to the Manitoba/Ontario border.
Some of the more unusual items found in the past include a message in a bottle (the message said, “Please don’t litter”), false teeth, a living room set, a canoe made out of duct tape, wedding dress, disco ball, a hotel safe, a toboggan, a mini trampoline and a clothesline complete with poles and pins. Now in its 17th year, this year’s Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup takes place from September 18–26, 2010. For more information or to register please visit shorelinecleanup.ca |

4th Annual Give the Gift of Life
On September 18, 2010 the Kidney Foundation of Canada will be hosting it's 4th annual Give the Gift of Life walk in Pembroke at the Riverwalk Amphitheatre.
The walk is a special occasion for dialysis patients, organ transplant recipients, donor families, living donors, and the general public to celebrate advances in kidney health and organ donation. Last year, friends and families joined together to raise kidney-health and organ donation awareness and in the process raised over $300,000. The Pembroke area raised $8300, a substantial jump from our first year at just over $1300.
We had 34 participants last year and are hoping to see that number jump to 50 this year. |
