Topic:Canada's Military Imperative: Why we need to chart a different course Speakers: Scott Taylor, Editor/ Publisher, Esprit de Corps & war correspondent & Col. Pat Stogran (retired), Canada's first Military Ombudsman Date: February 9, 2017 Time: 7-9pm Place: O'Brien Theatre Renfrew Cost: Tickets are $15 (incl HST) and now available at the O'Brien Theatre Renfrew Scott Taylor will be focusing on propaganda and how governments use it to advance their agendas. He will also relate his personal experience as a captive of Islamic extremists, as well as discuss the cultural challenges of fighting wars in countries like Iraq and Afghanistan. Pat Stogran will provide historical context to our current military situation and will discuss the concept of "Fourth Generation Warfare". He will outline the new tactics that non-state actors are deploying and will describe how they fund their activities. He will offer solutions for Canada's military role in the 21st century. Following the presentation, there will be a Q&A. We encourage people to share their questions and concerns. Book sales and signing onsite.   National Cupcake Day
Preheat those ovens! National Cupcake Day is coming up on Feb. 27 and you’re invited to help "bake" a difference for animals in need at the Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Animal Centre. Now in its fifth year, National Cupcake Day is presented in partnership by the Ontario SPCA and BC SPCA and is a collaborative event to support local SPCAs and Humane Societies across the country. In 2016, animal lovers across Canada raised over $615,000 in support of their local animal welfare societies. The campaign has raised $1.85 million to date. To participate, register to host a National Cupcake Day party and invite co-workers, friends and family. Guests donate to the participating animal welfare charity of the host's choice in exchange for a cupcake, raising critically-needed funds for animals that are abused, abandoned, neglected or no longer wanted.
