Engineering Competition Each year as part of National Engineering Month, the Professional Engineers Ontario Algonquin Chapter holds an Engineering competition for students in Renfrew County. This year students will be challenged to build Spacecraft Thrust Structures.
The purpose of this contest is to provide an opportunity for young students in Renfrew County to have fun exploring the exciting world of Engineering. Students will have a chance to learn about the forces exerted on a structure during a shuttle launch, and will experience the same design process used by Engineers and scientists at NASA when designing real spacecraft. Students can participate individually or in teams.
Several Engineers will be present throughout the competition to assist students with their structures, and answer any questions they have about the profession or what it takes to become an Engineer.
The competition is a drop-in event open to children in grades 6-12, and entry is free of charge. The challenge will take place in the Pembroke Mall (East end) outside Sportchek on Saturday, 6 March, 2010. The competition will run from 10am to 4pm. Students will be given all of the required material to construct thrust structures at the table. Constructing a thrust structure will take approximately 30-45 minutes, including testing.
The winning design will be the lightest structure that can survive launching a one-liter plastic bottle, filled with water, three times. Two cash prizes will be awarded for the best structures, one for grades six and seven, and another for students in high school.
